心臓の主な役割は、全身に血液を送り出すことである。
心臓は、全身循環 と呼ばれる体内の血液を肺 に送り込み、肺循環 と呼ばれる肺を通って再び体外に送り出す。
つまり、心臓は全身とつながっており、全身に影響を及ぼしているのである。簡単に言えば、心臓は循環 の回路のひとつである。健康な心臓については多くのことが知られているが、循環器学の研究の大部分は、心臓の障害と、可能であれば機能の回復である。
