語源 ギリシャ語の語源 を示す文献もあるが、「ために」を意味するラテン語の前置詞pro と、「生命に適した、生き生きとした」を意味するギリシャ語の形容詞βιωτικός（biōtikos ）の合成語と思われ、後者は「生命」を意味する名詞βίος（bios ）に由来する。完全な反意語 ではないが、語源的には抗生物質 プレバイオティクス prae に由来し、消化されず、むしろ有益な腸内微生物の増殖を促進するために発酵 される可能性のある物質を指す。
