Biochar production releases half of the carbon from the biomass—either released into the atmosphere or captured with CCS—and retains the other half in the stable biochar. It can endure in soil for thousands of years. Biochar may increase the [[soil fertility]] of [[acidic soil]]s and increase [[agricultural productivity]]. During production of biochar, heat is released which may be used as [[bioenergy]].
