ことわざ 「食べる」を意味するăn という言葉は、非常に多くのことわざ に含まれ、幅広い意味的拡張を持つ。
Ăn trông nồi, ngồi trông hướng （「食事中に飯鍋の様子を見て、座る場所/方向を見る」）＝失礼がないように注意せよ。Ăn theo thuở, ở theo thì （「季節に応じて食べ、季節に応じて生きる」）＝自分の分と社会状況に応じて生きる。Cha ăn mặn, con khát nước （「父親が塩辛いものを食べると、子供が喉が渇く」）＝悪い行いは後で子孫に悪運/結果をもたらす。Nhai kĩ no lâu, cày sâu tốt lúa （「よく噛むと満腹感が長く続き、深く耕すと米がよく育つ」）＝性急な行動よりも慎重な実行の方が良い結果をもたらす。Học ăn, học nói, học gói, học mở （「食べ方、話し方、包み方、開け方を学ぶ」）＝すべては学ぶ必要があり、最も単純なこと、例えば礼儀正しい「食べ方」から始める。
