高密度リポ蛋白質 （HDL ）は、リポ蛋白質 の5大グループの1つである。リポ蛋白質は複数の蛋白質からなる複雑な粒子であり、細胞外の水分の中で体内の全ての脂肪 分子（脂質 ）を輸送する。通常、粒子あたり80～100個のタンパク質で構成されている（1個、2個または3個のApoA によって組織されている）。HDL粒子は血液中を循環する間に大きくなり、より多くの脂肪分子を凝集させ、1粒子あたり最大数百の脂肪分子を輸送する。
