心停止の最も一般的な原因は冠動脈疾患 である。一般的ではない原因としては、大出血 、酸素不足、超低カリウム血症 、心不全 、激しい運動などがある。また、QT延長症候群 を含む多くの遺伝性疾患もリスクを高める可能性がある。初期心拍は心室細動 であることが多い。診断は脈がないことで確定される。心停止は心臓発作または心不全によって引き起こされることがあるが、これらは同じではない。
