首囲は、上半身の皮下脂肪蓄積を示す単純で信頼性の高い代用指標として用いられてきた。首囲が男性で40.25 cm (15.85 in)以上、女性で35.75 cm (14.07 in)以上はメタボリックシンドロームのハイリスクと考えられている。首囲が大きい人はメタボリックシンドロームのリスクが2倍以上になる。過体重/肥満の成人では、臨床的に有意な体重減少がCOVID-19を予防する可能性があり、頸部周囲径はCOVID-19患者の機械的人工呼吸のリスクと関連しており、頸部周囲径が1cm増加するごとにリスクは26%増加する。さらに、入院時に「大きな頚部表現型」を有するCOVID-19患者は死亡リスクが2倍以上であった。
