Husking and dehulling

A large wooden mortar with a wooden pestle lying horizontally across the top.
A wooden mortar and pestle was discovered at Briar's plantation in South Carolina. It was found in the rice loft and presumably used for dehulling.

Large mortars and pestles are still commonly used in developing countries to husk and dehull grain. These are usually made of wood, and operated by one or more persons.
