語源 英語のsaffron という単語の起源には、ある程度の不確実性がつきまとう。12世紀の古フランス語 のsafran に由来する可能性があり、これはラテン語のsafranum 、ペルシア語 （زعفران 、za'farān ）を経て、最終的には「金が連なる」（花の黄金色の雄しべ、または風味として使用した際に生み出す黄金色のいずれかを示唆）を意味するペルシア語のzarparān (زَرپَران ) に由来する。
