気候変動への寄与 窒素肥料の製造 および使用中に生成される温室効果ガス （二酸化炭素 、メタン 、亜酸化窒素 ）の量は、人為的な温室効果ガス排出量 の約5% と推定されている。そのうち3分の1は生産中に、3分の2は肥料の使用中に生成される。人間による亜酸化窒素排出量（そのほとんどは肥料に由来）は、2007年から2016年の間に年間700万トン と推定されており、これは地球温暖化を2°C未満に制限することと両立しない。
