2009 Interim Joint Statement
The International Diabetes Federation Task Force on Epidemiology and Prevention; the National Heart, Lung, and Blood Institute; the American Heart Association; the World Heart Federation; the International Atherosclerosis Society; and the International Association for the Study of Obesity published an interim joint statement to harmonize the definition of the metabolic syndrome in 2009. According to this statement, the criteria for clinical diagnosis of the metabolic syndrome are three or more of the following:
- Elevated waist circumference with population- and country-specific definitions
- Elevated triglycerides (≥ 150 mg/dL (1.7 mmol/L))
- Reduced HDL-C (≤40 mg/dL (1.0 mmol/L) in males, ≤50 mg/dL (1.3 mmol/L) in females)
- Elevated blood pressure (systolic ≥130 and/or diastolic ≥85 mm Hg)
- Elevated fasting glucose (≥100 mg/dL (5.55 mmol/L)
