On 4 August 2017, the Trump administration delivered an official notice to the United Nations that the United States, the second largest emitter of greenhouse gases after China, intended to withdraw from the Paris Agreement as soon as it was eligible to do so. The U.S. government deposited the notification with the secretary-general of the United Nations and officially withdrew one year later on 4 November 2020.
