In addition to traditional land-based methods to remove carbon dioxide (CO₂) from the air, other technologies are under development. These could reduce CO₂ emissions and lower existing atmospheric CO₂ levels. Carbon capture and storage (CCS) is a method to mitigate climate change by capturing CO₂ from large point sources, such as cement factories or biomass power plants. It then stores it away safely instead of releasing it into the atmosphere. The IPCC estimates that the costs of halting global warming would double without CCS.
