Defective synthesis results in the human inherited disorder [[lathosterolosis]] resembling [[Smith–Lemli–Opitz syndrome]]. Mice where this gene has been deleted lose the ability to increase vitamin D<sub>3</sub> in the blood following UV exposure of the skin.
