In the 15th century, Portuguese settlers on [[Madeira]] noticed the abundance of wild fennel and used the [[Portuguese language|Portuguese]] word ''[[wikt:funcho#Portuguese|funcho]]'' (fennel) and the suffix ''{{lang|pt|-al}}'' to form the name of a new town, [[Funchal]].
