Zinc is an efficient [[Lewis acid]], making it a useful catalytic agent in [[hydroxylation]] and other enzymatic reactions. The metal also has a flexible [[coordination geometry]], which allows proteins using it to rapidly shift [[protein structure|conformations]] to perform biological reactions.
