The sensitivity of members of the genus &amp;#039;&amp;#039;Bifidobacterium&amp;#039;&amp;#039; to O&amp;lt;sub&amp;gt;2&amp;lt;/sub&amp;gt; generally limits probiotic activity to anaerobic habitats. Recent research has reported that some &amp;#039;&amp;#039;Bifidobacterium&amp;#039;&amp;#039; strains exhibit various types of [[wikt:oxic|oxic]] growth. Low concentrations of O&amp;lt;sub&amp;gt;2&amp;lt;/sub&amp;gt; and CO&amp;lt;sub&amp;gt;2&amp;lt;/sub&amp;gt; can have a stimulatory effect on the growth of these &amp;#039;&amp;#039;Bifidobacterium&amp;#039;&amp;#039; strains. Based on the growth profiles under different O&amp;lt;sub&amp;gt;2&amp;lt;/sub&amp;gt; concentrations, the &amp;#039;&amp;#039;Bifidobacterium&amp;#039;&amp;#039; species were classified into four classes: O&amp;lt;sub&amp;gt;2&amp;lt;/sub&amp;gt;-hypersensitive, O&amp;lt;sub&amp;gt;2&amp;lt;/sub&amp;gt;-sensitive, O&amp;lt;sub&amp;gt;2&amp;lt;/sub&amp;gt;-tolerant, and [[microaerophilic]]. The primary factor responsible for aerobic growth inhibition is proposed to be the production of [[hydrogen peroxide]] (H&amp;lt;sub&amp;gt;2&amp;lt;/sub&amp;gt;O&amp;lt;sub&amp;gt;2&amp;lt;/sub&amp;gt;) in the growth medium. A H&amp;lt;sub&amp;gt;2&amp;lt;/sub&amp;gt;O&amp;lt;sub&amp;gt;2&amp;lt;/sub&amp;gt;-forming [[NADH]] [[oxidase]] was purified from O&amp;lt;sub&amp;gt;2&amp;lt;/sub&amp;gt;-sensitive &amp;#039;&amp;#039;Bifidobacterium bifidum&amp;#039;&amp;#039; and was identified as a &amp;#039;&amp;#039;b&amp;#039;&amp;#039;-type [[dihydroorotate dehydrogenase]]. The kinetic parameters suggested that the enzyme could be involved in H&amp;lt;sub&amp;gt;2&amp;lt;/sub&amp;gt;O&amp;lt;sub&amp;gt;2&amp;lt;/sub&amp;gt; production in highly aerated environments.&lt;/div&gt;</summary>
