The following terms are similar, yet distinct, in both spelling and meaning, and can be easily confused: [[arteriosclerosis]], [[arteriolosclerosis]], and atherosclerosis.  &amp;#039;&amp;#039;Arteriosclerosis&amp;#039;&amp;#039; is a general term describing any hardening (and loss of elasticity) of medium or large arteries ({{ety|gre|&amp;#039;&amp;#039;ἀρτηρία&amp;#039;&amp;#039; (artēria)|artery||&amp;#039;&amp;#039;σκλήρωσις&amp;#039;&amp;#039; ([[wikt:sclerosis|sklerosis]])|hardening}}); &amp;#039;&amp;#039;arteriolosclerosis&amp;#039;&amp;#039; is any hardening (and loss of elasticity) of [[arteriole]]s (small arteries); &amp;#039;&amp;#039;atherosclerosis&amp;#039;&amp;#039; is a hardening of an artery specifically due to an [[Atheroma|atheromatous plaque]] ({{ety|grc| &amp;#039;&amp;#039;ἀθήρα&amp;#039;&amp;#039; (athḗra)|gruel}}).
